The so-called Largo de Deserto (Square of the Deserted) is a mysterious space in the Lisbon district of Santos, devoid of any signs of life, except for a few decrepit trees stooping along its boundary.
One experiences a peculiar feeling of sadness and loneliness whilst wandering this quiet, cobbled vacuum. In the centre lies a dry, parched fountain from which the statue of a nameless woman looks down on you with pity and condolence. For legend has it that when the bells of the nearby Santos-O-Velho Church toll, any person caught lingering here will bear these feelings of emptiness for the rest of their natural life.
